They are all three wines from Screaming Eagle! It all started with the Cabernet, this wine here. Jean Philips bought land directly on the Silveradotrail on volcanic soil in 1986, planted vines whose fruit Heidi Barrett pressed in 1992 for the first Screaming Eagle and offered it for a “horrendous” US$ 75.00. My friend Bob Parker gave the wine a whopping 99 points and described the winery as “one of the most exciting new wineries in California”. The foundation for the cult winery par excellence had been laid. Subsequently, the Philips & Barrett duo produced many great wines, although under their leadership they only managed a “perfect score” for the 1997 vintage. In 2006, Jean sold the winery and a new team took over: Nick Gislason in the cellar and our man in the Napa Valley, David Abreu, in the vineyard. Since then, Parker has awarded 100 points for a Screaming Eagle Cab a whopping six times. This shows what perfect vineyard work can achieve!
