Daniel Huber, a pioneering winegrower from German-speaking Switzerland, is convinced that wines with character can grow in Malcantone, in the Tresa Valley, like nowhere else in Ticino. Back then, he reclaimed his land with his bare hands. Daniel lived his philosophy and so it comes as no surprise that his son Jonas, who followed in his footsteps in 2018, is skillfully managing his legacy. Of course, he brings his own new ideas to Huber Vini, working more sustainably and somewhat more reductively than his father. The wines are fruity, complex and mineral as usual and are among the very best that our sunny region is capable of producing.
The brothers Giorgio and Andrea Rossi produce great wines on their Azienda Mondo between Bellinzona and Locarno, the fruit of which grows on perfectly exposed slopes. The couple tend the vines in harmony with Mother Nature and do not allow them to bear too much fruit. This allows them to harvest healthy, ripe grapes for their Mondo wines in the fall. In addition to Merlot, they also plant the almost extinct Bondola, from which Giorgio and Andrea press a spicy, rustic red wine. In any case, you can look forward to genuine Ticino wines!
The Monti family's vineyards are nestled in forests high above Agno airport. In the vineyard and cellar, Ivo Monti, who took over the business from his father Sergio many years ago, attaches great importance to ecology. All wines are matured in barriques. The Rovere is a pure Merlot that is rather opulent and rich in fascinating fruit aromas. The Rosso dei Ronchi Malcantone is a cuvée of Merlot, Diolinoir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carminoir. Ivo Monti's white wine is one of the top wines in southern Switzerland.
High above Lake Lugano, the Rudolph family has created a gem with the Tenuta (vineyard) San Giorgio. On three hectares of vineyards, some of which slope down to the lake, all precautions are carefully and prudently taken to produce first-class fruit in the fall. In a traditional manner, the Rudolphs and their team press balanced wines in the small but fine winery, which express their origins in a natural way and at the highest level.
Werner is the pioneer of the Swiss-German winegrowers' colony in Ticino, who has been and still is available to all newcomers with help and advice. He is the only one of our winegrowers to have his vineyards in Sopra Ceneri, some of which are on extremely steep slopes. Werner Stucky wines, such as the Tracce, a pure Merlot, or the Conte di Luna, which consists of half Cabernet Sauvignon and is only produced in the best years. Finally, the Temenos is an unusual cuvée that Werner Stucky creates from Sauvignon Blanc and Completer, an old, indigenous Swiss grape variety.
Daniel Huber, Werner Stucky and Christian Zündel from German-speaking Switzerland had to endure ridicule, sometimes even mockery, in the 1980s. The entrepreneurial risk, the hard work and precisely this disdain were able to put an end to their dream and their vision. No, recognition followed when Christian Zündel turned to biodynamics at the beginning of the 21st century. His life's work bears fruit in many ways, his breathtaking wines alone are probably only the sweetest for us, because continuity and further development must be an even sweeter elixir. In 2020, daughter Myra took over the winery and has been following in her father's footsteps ever since, but without sacrificing her own creativity - just as you would expect from the Zündels!
