Montmains faces south-east on marl and is one of the finest terroirs in the Chablis appellation. Bessin's vines are a good 35 years old and produce fruit that is nothing less than brilliant. The father (Jean-Claude) and son (Romain) team place the terroir at the center of their wines. The two love this peculiarity, unique to Chablis, of growing a dense wine that is also fine and elegant. Naturally for the Bessins, but rather unusually for the appellation, the grapes are harvested by hand and vinified in an aroma-neutral way in order to let the terroir speak for itself, as mentioned above.
Montmains smells wonderfully of a wonderful mix of lemon blossom, crisp green apples and a hint of crème patissier. Delicious! Elegant, yet with noticeable extract, a great freshness and a fascinatingly clear finish, this Chablis gets to the heart of the matter. This is really good stuff!
