We enjoyed our first bottle of Vatan Sancerre, how could it be otherwise, in Paris with our dear friend Antoine Petrus. The wine had a powerful, positive influence on us; it blew us away. No, not as you might think, the wine is not a bomb, no, it is elegant, delicate and mysterious. That was some time ago. Unfortunately, we only managed to visit Anne Vatan, the winemaker, in January 2019. We were greeted by a beautiful sight as we approached the wide-open cellar door, where Anne was waiting for us, sitting on a red stool on the beach of her bottles, gloved up, sticking on the labels and greeting us like old friends. It still warms my heart today, no nonsense. We tasted the 2015 and 2016 vintages, which Anne had opened for us. Both wines developed tentatively, but with a clear tendency towards spicy, then delicately fruity, always mysteriously winding, magical wines.
