Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch, Thanisch heirs

The way in which the Thanisch family deals with its history as a winegrowing family here in Bernkastel-Kues, which dates back to 1636, and not only ensures its continued existence, but also its development, is simply fantastic.

Christina has not only been setting the tone in the cellar since 2018, but also in the nine hectares of vines, all of which are in prime locations such as Badstube, Lay, Graben and Doctor. No pesticides or herbicides are used and yields are rigorously reduced. Sustainability and responsible use of natural resources are not just advertising slogans here, no, they are principles that are put into practice.

Christina and her view of things, her way of working, will have a significant influence, a positive influence, on the history of Thanisch! Her 2020 wines provide a foretaste of this, all of which are fantastic because they bring the terroir to the fore in a direct and undisguised way and show that someone is at work here who is not afraid of work or risk and also knows how to use their talent so efficiently that it causes a stir among colleagues in the region and ultimately among us!

How did the "Doctor" location get its name, you ask? According to legend, Elector Boemund II was cured of a serious illness in 1367 by drinking wines from this vineyard and Britain's King Edward VII also drank the "Doctor" as medicine. We, on the other hand, drink it for pure pleasure and this also promises healing ... of the soul.

Last but not least, we would like to warn you that not all Thanish is the same! If you do some research, you will come across two other winegrowers with the name Thanisch. One in Lieser, which never had anything to do with "our Thanischs". And the winery of Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch Erben Müller-Burggraef, which in the past belonged to "our Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch Erben Thanisch", before not only the vineyards were divided vertically in 1987, but also the cellar carved deep into the rock of the Berncasteler Doctor in the 17th century, where to this day a considerable proportion of the wines of both wineries mature in their barrels and also houses the treasure chamber.

In short, "our Thanisch" is the real Thanisch!

Sincerely

Carl J. Studer
